Looks like a recoilless rifle---Gunner, I jsut bet those pictures were taken in January/February 1968---I was up the street at Dong Ha---some of those mountain backdrops sure look like Quang Tri Province. You guys sure as hell earned your keep down there in Hue. Were you there when the marines blew the bridge over the river because the NVA was showing up with tanks?? Chief

    Neil ...

Chief was correct as that is called a 106 mm recoiless rifle ...

    Chief ...

When I arrived the bridge was still intact at that time and our company ... G 2/5 Marines assaulted it but we got hit real hard and pushed back. Lost a lot of good men on that attempt.

We later moved to the west (from that bridge) towards the Phu Cam canal and had our hands full over in that area of the city and I do not know for sure when exactly when they blew the bridge as the entire battle lasted for weeks on end.

I was hit real good for the third and last time on February 19 while guarding the canal for a possible enemy crossover/assault on the citys west flank and the bridge and the Citadel was not in my view from my position but all I know (or remember) was that both were still in tact when I left to the best of my knowledge.

My memory got mixed up there Gunner--it was the bridge over the Cua Viet (sp) River outside of Dong Ha City that the marine EOD blew---I recall that permission was not given from I Corp and the old marine 'bird' took it on his own to blow the bridge---they raised hell with him for making that 'on-scene' call!!! That's why these stories need to be written down Gunner--memories fade as well they should---it's the damn dreams that remain vivid!!! Chief

    I'm seeing them fine.

Fearless, are you getting red X's, or are they just not showing at all?

    Hey 60,
Weird how I just found the site and see your pics. I did time with the 5th several times in 66,67,68 I did a couple of TAD jobs G 2/5 H 2/5 mid 67 when their own Corpsman were injured or R&R. Was in Phu Bai 2/68 staring my 2nd tour when Tet started. As I remember the 5th was on a stand down after having been beat up pretty bad. They got rounded up and shipped off in mixed platoons. A Captain (never knew his name) rounded up another Co. of mixed 2/5 1/5 marines and asked for a couple of Corpsmen from D Med. We were OP/CON to (I think) 2/5.
    What a frickin mess!
I was in Hue City on "the grand tour" 1 month before the whole thing started. Saw the Palace before it got bombed, saw the Cathedral/ Virgin Mary statue. saw the University, and saw the Imperial Cemetary or whatever they called it out side the city.
I also saw all the civilians in those piles and in the river.
Watched the Skyraders blow the **** out of the whole palace too.

Great pictures SixT, thanks. My last battalion was 1/3 Marines and we were right next to 1/5 on Okinawa 15 years ago. Good bunch. I was a long in the tooth corporal, almost sergeant, then but carried an M60 for a couple of years before that when I first joined in the mid-80's. I'd almost fogotten how young I really was. It was the guys like you that trained me and I'm grateful for it.

Damn, it was good to be young and bulletproof! We were all such young & handsom soldiers. I was only 19 1/2 y.o. when I got there in '72 and thought I was one bad mo-fo. I went up North to I Corp for about 2 months in mid-72. Everything North of Hue was bad guy territory. Quang Tri was a big NVA stronghold and that's why I was there. We took 55 Marine CH-53 Jolly Greens & CH-46's into that place in one giant air assault at high noon. Boy what a shootout that turned out to be! A couple of weeks before that I got to go to Dong Ha too, but there were so many people shooting at us I didn't get to take any pictures or enjoy the sights.

    SixTGnr, you 'da man!:D

  20. Yup, that is so true, Snake. Looking back today, I often wonder just how we (some of us anyway :() actually survived it.
