What's the general consensus of the 9mm 1911?

I wouldn't object to shooting cheaper and with less recoil. I have no interest in personal defense and aren't aware of 45 hunting uses.

Does the 1911 design function as well as a 9mm? Is it the same frame size, handle size?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

if they can do it with a .22 i'm sure a 9mm works even better

I do intend to shoot IDPA and other recreation sporting with it.

If I understand IDPA correctly a 9mm 1911 is an ESP rating, the easiest shooting gun. Which in general is one thing that interests me in the 9mm 1911. However, in this case it's not necessarily a good thing as at the only IDPA event I have attended out of 32 shooters there were only 2 ESP shooters - yes, both were men. ;-)

Anyway, it appears that I will not have many peers to shoot against in the standings with this gun. Not too big a deal, but as I progress in skill level, this may become a problem. Of course, if I'm shooting often enough for it to matter to me, maybe I'll appreciate the price of the 9mm ammo which is another thing that attracts me to the 9.

Laslty, dumb question, and I'm nearly certain I know the answer, but can someone comfirm for me - to remove the slightest doubt - that a 9mm luger is in fact the same as a 9x19?

Yes, 9mm Luger, 9x19 and 9mm Parabellum are the same cartridge. 9mm Luger is what it is commonly called here in the US.
The 1911 is a great platform for the 9mm cartridge. Colt did make them, but not in great numbers. A .38 Super gun can easily be converted to 9mm Luger with just a barrel and mag change though. I built two 1911's in 9mm and love to shoot them. Recoil is low and they are very accurate in the lighter cal.
