I took out my beloved Remington model 600 in .243 today to try two different loads, both of which I've used before but I tweaked the OAL's a bit. The first and third groups were with IMR 4350 39.5 grains with Hornady 100 grain btsp, loaded to the cannelure. The second group was with Sierra 100 grain gamekings, also btsp and the same powder and charge. These I loaded out a bit and should have been about .03 or so off the lands. I've chrono'd these loads before with the Hornady giving about 2600 fps and the siierra's giving about 50 fps less (keeping in mind that the 600 has a shorter barrel than most bolt guns). I shot one fouler at the upper left target to get things started and went from there. After the first group I moved the scope 1 click to the left to help center the rounds. All rounds were shot at 100 yards with a light breeze, maybe 50 degrees outside.
What really surprised me was how well I did (!) with the Hornady bullets, and how poorly the sierra did at that OAL. This is some of the finest shooting I've done, so pardon the self-pat on the back
Here's the pics
1st is of the Hornady showing the fouler,
2nd is a closeup of the group,
3rd is Sierra
4th is second Hornady group.
Anyone have any ideas as to why the Sierra's shoot at a higher poi than the Hornady's?
