UPDATE: A RANT due to HVAC repair rip offs...

Well got my heat pump fixed. Warranty covered the blower motor BUT still had to pay $475 for them to take old one off and drive 100 miles to get new one then install it. They checked all the circuits, relays, compacitors, freon level, and compressor as well so I was good with that price. I now believe the motor had been going south for a while by the way the new blower is doing. I now have some GOOD HVAC people to do all the things I mmght need. He is coming back in spring to do a spring check up, run all my duct work under the house for any leaks and to maybe add bigger ducts for more flow. I had planned on that anyways this spring when we do a LOT of remodeling.
So $475 is a lot better than the $690 at the least and $1700 at the upper end the one rip off company was going to charge with out doing all the checking of other items (i.e. circuits, relays, capacitors, and etc,). The ones that I used said even if compressor was shot it would cost me maybe another $400 at most and over $200 of that would be the R-22 freon being it has went from $160 per 30 pound to $360 since August. Said R-22 Freon is rumored to be over $500 per 30 pound by beginning of summer!!!!! So if you think you might need a check up, get it now on your AC unit or heat pump in case freon is needed.
Wife is happy, she has her "even" heat again. the kerosene heater was keeping the house well over 80 degrees and that was on the lowest setting that it would turn down to!!!!! Now an even 71 degrees again with most likly less work on the heat pump.
Now to sit down and do some letters and such that was some excellent advice from a gentleman here.

    ========================================================================================
My heat pump broke down last night at 11 PM so not heat all night, here is the rant as to a ripoff!!!
Well called the HVAC company out of Lexington KY that comes out on weekends to look and repair units first thing this mourning. I have a Goodman heat pump bought new in 07 with a 10 year warranty that I bought from an out fit in my home town that has since went under thanks to the IRS coming in on them for not paying their taxes!!! Well the unit is an outside all in one setup, only duct work in house. The blower motor locked up last night. It will run for 5 minutes and then lock up tighter than a drum, let sit for an hour and turn it one with same results so betting it is shot BUT I have a 10 year parts warranty. Well the company said they would have to charge a $90 service call which I expected and them do the warranty work. Now I went and took ALL the panels off so all they had to do was unbolt the motor, take wires of, take cage off, reinstall wires & cage on new motor, and install it. Then they need to check all the freon and such. Well the motor is under $200 but is covered by warranty. They said it was a category IV call for them as to warranty so to install the new motor would be the $90 service call and $750 dollars for motor and installation but then they take $150 off that for cost of motor!!! WTF! I can buy the motor and do it for under $200!!! They are charging me $600 JUST to take off old motor and install new one, a FRUCKIN ripoff!!!! I said what if when the motor locked it damaged the compressor and it needs replaced, does that cover that too. They said no, that was another $90 service call, $750 to install compressor, and they take off $150 for the warrenty even though they do both in ONE trip, AGAIN WTF, a screwing with not even a kiss or flowers!!!!!!! So if both blower motor is bad and compressor is bad I am looking at OVER $1400 NOT counting the Freon it takes to fill the compressor which he said was at least $300, WTF, Screwing with me paying to be screwed!!!! So over $1700 dollars when a new BIGGER, more energy efficient unit that I can install myself being all duct work and wiring in place ONLY costs $3000 delivered to my door and that is free freight!!!! For $1300 more a brand new bigger units that saves 15% more on energy BUT my unit is under WARRANTY so why a new unit?!? WTF yet again!!!!

Well I was outraged to say the least PLUS they could do nothing till Monday even though they GUARANTEED they can get a temporary fix on ANYTHING to get me heat but they cannot on mine for some reason after the 3rd call to them today. Well Joey (my son) called a man he used to help in HVAC (the man now lives too far away to help us) and he told us the company we called was a scam of epic proportions being he knew first hand from when he worked for them BUT quit due to all the screwing they gave people. He gave us the number of some one else and I talked to them with them telling me that under warranty the fix should be no more than $500 or so IF both blower motor AND compressor are shot. They are coming Monday mourning HOWEVER still no heat till then with 2 inches of snow coming and temps of 20 degrees. I went and bought a new 23,000 BTU Kerosene heater, 20 gallons of Kerosene, and jugs to use till Monday or till fixed at a cost of a good $200 plus. I could hook up my salamander heater BUT the fumes in the house would be too much and it sounds like a dang jet plane. Would have to set it too blow under the house would keep it HOT in here though, it is 148,000 BTU and runs on diesel, kerosene, or jet fuel and runs through 20 gallon of diesel in 10 hours on LOW.

So I am going to call the BBB and make a formal complaint against the one company that is the only one in the area that makes weekend and night calls but like it will do any good. I found out from my wife they are the same company that services ALL the state HVAC troubles that are out sourced!!!! They were down at the State Resort Park where she is the Chef at just this week working on a heating unit for the 5th time this month and we are only 17 days into it!!! now wonder KY has such a high income tax rate, bet the owner of the HVAC company is a good friend or family member of some high ranking KY state official in Frankfort!!!

So there is my rant and yes I should have stayed in bed all this freakin decade. It has been one of nothing but BAD luck that has cost me a LOT! At the rate I am going my loyal dog will attack me and chew my foot off!!! Here she is looking so mean peaking out from under a ELECTRIC blanket so she will stay warm!!!

OMG that plC needs to be burnt down. That is a major ripoff.

My HVAC company would have had it fixed and a fair price by this evening.

I would have thought real hard about shooting that guy in the knee cap.

I've had companies talk rip-off, and always get multiple bids, even in the summer with AC systems. My son got taken to the cleaners, paid $10K for a $5K system that he didn't need. I warned him but he wouldn't listen, said the AC wasn't working. I looked at the compressor they pulled. It was clogged with dirt. Of course it wasn't working. A $75 service call at the time would have done the job.

    Yep happens all the time.

A few years back i had a ac guy tell me he could not tell me how much it would cost to fix the ac. Said he didn't know if he could find a new evap. So he threw me numbers and i mean threw. SO since i had window units in the bedrooms allready i just went and bought a 12K btu for the living area and it's been that way ever since. Recently like 2 weeks ago my blower motor went out on the heater. So in a few weeks i will fix both on my own terms. Untill them I am using 2 space heaters. It doesn't get real cold down here so i am not sweating it. Our summers now that is another story. That is why i have multipal ac's.

So much for your warranty. Makes you wanna do something. Take a breath. I find if you take a good deep breath and one of those little white pills (if your doctor will give them to you) it helps fit all that up your backside. Especially when they break it off in there.

I feel your pain. I went through something similar when my A/C went out two years ago.
I think they are all out to get you. Started talking to my neighbor next door, and found out that his dad did HVAC work, and he got me a realy good deal!

4 years ago at my old house the hot surface ignitor gave out at 5:30 on a friday night. I called and the only place that would answer said they could sell me a new one for $200 and I could install it myself. I got a second opinion from a friend of mine who works at a HVAC wholesaler. he got me a new one for $23. quite the markup, huh? no wonder Cleen Plumbing and Heating is no longer in business

Almost all heating guys are con artists and ripoff specialists.

7 years ago I needed a new furnace and got 4 bids...2 of them said "man, that furnace is soo old...at least 40 years old" 2 were honest - it was 16 years old.
I got 2 quotes for $5-6k range and the two rip off guys quoted in the 9-11k range. One is the big dog around here - multiple location, ads on TV, guarantees about this that and the other thing....

The one that did the work is now out of business....so yeah, I feel you pain!

I don't understand how the honest guys can't stay in business (pay their bills and taxes apparently) but the overpriced con artists can thrive!

And good f'n luck on DIY. As a long time mechanic I can take a whack at it - and so far have fixed the three issues I've had (I have more than one building so more than one furnace). A local place to get parts, ok, the ONLY place to get furnace parts, charges out the yang to DIY'ers. Part online, if you want to wait a week for heat...was $87. Locally? $219!

I want ot move to florida and they wife can't figure out why!

I have been an auto mech./one man shop owner for 30 years. I have always been fair and honest. A few years back, my brother and I thought maybe we could make some real money in HVAC, so we gave it a go. After 2 years, I went back to autos. HVAC is too seasonal for an honest man to make a living year round. That's why those shops all try to sell service contracts, spring and fall tune ups, a new unit to everyone they can, and have high prices. Of course there are exceptions to that rule, but it is going to be with a small or one man company rather than the big shops.
It's kind of the same thing at a pool supply store, a piece of plastic is $20.00, because if it wasn't, they wouldn't be there next year because the season is so short. I'm not condoning their practices, but it seems to be a neccesary part of staying in that business. I didn't have it in me.

That's really not a bad mark up, I would say. Was that $87 before shipping? So closer to $100.
And they have it sitting on their shelf there locally for months on end waiting to sell. Inventory costs big money. Planning ahead is worth money. Getting the part you need when you need it is worth money. I would pay $219 for a heating part no question; I'd probably tough it out for AC, but I live in the northern half of the country. ;)

And I've never found an online parts seller that didn't do overnight shipping. I do way more appliance repair than HVAC (I have a good HVAC guy that treats me fair), but they always will ship overnight, even when I've ordered panes of glass.

Your right there are a million parts to stock at 50 bucks a piece when do you recoup your money? I run a small business and your right but lets not forget what the brother from another monther told us not too long ago, I am talking about none other than bozo the ahole. Remember when he said "right now is not the time for profits". What he was saying was right now is the time for bankruptcy.

When your house is cold and you cant fix it, thank bozo
When your mouth is open and nothing to put in it, thank bozo
When your wife hates your guts cause your eating peanut butter and jelly, thank bozo.
When your dog is hungry, thanks be to bozo
When you haven't had a vacation in 4 years, thank bozo
When you pay 4 and 5 dollars a gallon for gas, thank bozo
When you pay 10 dollars for a gallon of milk, thank bozo
When you recall that 6.5 trillion dollars that just had to be printed, thank bozo.
When you recalll that a brother took advantage of you, thank bozo.
    That'll keep ya warm.

You think FLA is cheaper? One of the more expensive places to go or live. They don't have a lot of need for heat - but that AC runs nearly nonstop and costs a WHOLE lot more than heat!

Been to baltimore/DC and have family there, and in Boson and Dallas area and my brother in law moved to jacksonville 2 years ago.
Food in fla is cheaper than here. pay about the same from what little i've looked. houses can be more -or less, depending on many factors. My brother in law bought a foreclosure for $75k that 3 or 4 years ago sold in the $260s.

Yeah, don't know what AC costs there...here heat/elec (one bill) costs me $430ish a month on the budget plan so that's each month for all 12. It dropped some this year because of the mild winter and marcellus shale gas, but it was over $500 3 years ago. And we don't have A/C, so that's just heat and electricity.
