I have a new AR15. It is chambered for .223/5.56, I was wanting to get a new upper for it in 308. If I buy an upper minus the bolt and carrier, will the .223 bolt and carrier work in it, or do I need to buy a caliber specific set up?
The lower receiver doesn't have the positioning correct for the extra length of the .308. As mentioned, the magazine won't come even close to fitting, and the bolt face for the .223 is just about .100 too small for the .308.
A few manufacturers are scrambling to make a rifle like the AR-10 and the SR-25, but they are running into physical limitations, not to mention patents that are in place.
About the only thing I can see working on a .308, AR-15 style rifle, that are from an AR-15, are odd parts like buttplates, sights, sling swivels, and perhaps triggers.

You can convert to a 50 Beouff but not to a .308 cause of the mag well
