I'm no expert but from what I have heard and read I would guess it was Isreal with their Galil rifle. But I'm not sure if these are being made any more.

Technically the Galil is not an AK-47 but a modified version of it made by the Israelis
But there really is no such thing as a good quality AK
They are meant to be cheap
And besides the ak is an aoutomatic weapon and therefore illeagul in the united states
So you could buy an SKS which is the civilian version of the AK and it is single shot
it is pretty cheap but there are many variations which could lower or raise the price
    Hope this helps

    Srry about my first post
    they are technically not illeagul
But you must go through certain procedures through the BATF (Bureau of alchohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives)

Soviet-made AK74. It's about the most refined Russian variant of the AK design. I'm sure the Chinese have much more improved ones. I know the Chinese have a couple bullpup designs that are based on the AK rifle. But I don't think the Chinese stuff is as well made, personally. I had a friend who had a Romanian WASR that shot .223. Was a pretty good rifle.

But all-around the Russian ones are the best quality.

Remember some states have assault weapons bans in place too.

I thought the Galil also fired the 5.56x45 NATO round? A real AK uses the 7.62x39 or the 5.45x39.

They're not illegal. You just have to do the right papers and pay the taxes. And I thought the only rifles illegal in the United States are anything imported and made after 1994. Not totally sure on that one though.

the polish ak's are high quality compared to most of the others. the russian made ones are equally as good. the others are hit or miss as far as workmanship/quality

the rk62 is made by valmet, yes it's based on a ak47 but it's like saying a yugo is based on a cadillac because they are both cars....

The best AK is the best one you can find for the price you're willing to pay. I wouldn't say any one manufacturer is better than another. Just more expensive based on construction and materials. Back when the AK and every other Assault rifle was going crazy I stumbled across a Yugo Folder with a 75rd mag and 2 30rd mags for $550.00. At the time it was a steal! Now, I don't know... but I'll tell you this... That freakin' thing is amazingly accurate! I can hit an 18"x18" steel plate at 300yds off-hand with that thing every time! Using cheap Wolf ammo. It's built like a piece of crap. Loose tolerances, crappy machining, unfinished wood, etc. But it works every time and it hits what I aim at. Just find one that will do that and you're GTG!

There are many versions out there. All rough and ready. None extremely accurate.

Some of the Chinese SKS's were also made with AK receivers so they can accept the 30-round AK magazines. I think the Chinese call it the Type 68. Their normal SKS model is the Type 56 Carbine and then they have the Type 56 which is their AK copy. They are all made by Norinco.

It depends on what you mean by "best".
The semi version of the AK47 is about the most dependable of all the autoloaders.
It has been proven many times that in almost any condition the AK will fire when most others jam.
The only drawback the7.62x39 round is not as accurate as others of about the same size.
That is why some call it junk, because they compare the AR15 to the AK47.
That is comparing a $1000 or more gun to a $300 to $400 gun of course the AK will look like junk.
But on the other hand the AK74 is a totally different ball of wax.
It is very accurate, my Bulgarian AK74 is more accurate than my AR15. And the 5.45x39 ammo cost about half of what the .223s run.
