What is the best deal for reliable bulk MIL Spec 5.56 ammo for a 1 in 9 twist 16 inch mid-barrel gas pickoff AR-15?
I normally reload for myself but this is for my adult son’s AR15 I just built for him. The upper is DPMS. To keep up with his occasional shooting I was thinking it might be better to just buy him a 1000 rounds of good bargain bulk ammo. Note the barrel is marked 5.56 not 223 so 5.56 ammo is OK for this gun. I see ads for this kind of ammo all the time but worry that it may be junk ammo and we'll get stuck with 1000 rounds of less than good ammo.
Wideners.com has some good prices, but I don't know how much shipping is.My son has put over 5k cheap steel case through his Me.Bushmaster,I updated extractor with a Wolff extra power spring and MGI D-Ring,it runs flawlessly.
I bought a 520 rounds of the Wolf Gold .223 Remington a month or so ago from the sportsmans guide. The pricing was fair and the quality of the ammo seems to be good. I have only shot 60 rounds of it so far but the accuracy is good for a cheaper ammo plus it is brass cased and boxer primed so it is reloadable.
They sell 500 rounds for $157.69 (members price) or 260 rounds for $77.89, so it is a couple of bucks cheaper to buy two of the 260 round deals. their 1000 round deal is $308.64 (again member's price).
I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but thought I would suggest it.
If you don't mind shooting steel case I've bought and shot lot's of Herter's from Cabelas. They have 2 sku's. One is $5.99/20 the other is $4.99/20. The cheaper is Tula. Same looking box, but if you look closely the manufacturer code is different. These are there regular prices. If you have the Cabela's Visa and club, you can get 5% back and it's subject to all "whole house" coupon deals as well.
I would look into pmc. do some searching. Good stuff, cheap, and reloadable. Hay i also like the rem umc stuff. they use commercial brass easy to reload. cost you more tho.
I've had pretty good luck with the Romanian SADU SS109 ammo in my Huldra(Adams) upper. The ammo is good and I've had good luck so far with reloading the brass too. Either the original packaged stuff from buygunsandammo or the HotShot packaged stuff from other places.
Like all the 62gr loads, it seems to be pretty hard to find since the M855/SS109 ban threat a while back.
That stuff and Federal/Lake City XM855 is the only thing I've been buying in that caliber. Haven't messed with any of the steel-case stuff.
I usually search Slickguns and ammoseek when I'm shopping.
I've seen some decent deals at Walmart recently, it was about 40 cents per round 500 pack.
