How do you go about measuring the bore on a gun which you can't push the lead ball all the way through the barell. In other words if soft lead is forced into the barrel how is it fished back out ? I there some type of a bore gauge?

You need to unbreech the barrel and push it all the way through. What kind of gun is it?

Most likely a 45 then. They make bore gauges and you can buy one at either:
    http://www.dixiegunparts.com
    or
    http://www.logcabinshop.com

They look like a triangle, small enough to fit on a key chain, and if you fool with BP guns they are very handy when you are looking to buy one that no one knows the caliber or bore of.
