I just received a Browning 308 semi-auto rifle. I have tried to get information about the rifle but all I can find out is that it is a BAR shorttrac.
The the following information is stamped on the rifle:
    1. 15 387 M69
    2. CALIBER .308 ONLY
    3. MADE IN BELGIUM
    4. a proof mark (?) a crown over an oval with the letters P V
on the right side is an engraving of a deer head
on the left side is an engraving of a elk head
    any information would be helpful
    Thank You

It is not a Browning BAR Short Trac. That is a current model with the 'Euro' styling that, to me anyway, makes the gun look Euro-trashy.

Your gun is a Browning BAR chambered for .308 Winchester, made in 1969 at the Fabrique Nationale plant in Belgium.

1969 is early 'salt-wood' era for the BAR. I would suggest removing the buttplate screws and checking to see if they have rusted. If they have, you may have some unpleasant surprises if you remove the stock and forend.

    Thank you for information.
Pulled the butt plate off and both screws were
    black with no rust.
Also checked the screw head that is visible and that
    is silver with no rust.
Does that mean the engravings are standard on this rifle?

The standard grade was not engraved, nor were the screw heads silver. Grade III and up were. Can you post good clear pictures of the gun?

That's OK. You have the Grade II, and I see no evidence of the salt wood problem. Nice rifle.
