With limited reciprocity among the states, traveling with a carried firearm is sometimes a tricky task. My Indiana license is accepted by Kentucky, so I carry when I head down there. But have to briefly unload and case my pistol as I go, because I travel through Ohio for about 30 minutes or so on the way.
Some states (most notably Utah and Florida) offer non-resident permits that expand the areas legal for the holder to carry a loaded handgun.
So how many here have taken the time to acquire a carry license/permit for multiple states? (NOTE: The poll is intentionally anonymous.)
My GA license allows me to carry in just about every state in the South - except SC which is where I live on the weekends. While I can get an SC permit (as I own land there), I just haven't found the time to waste a day at a training session. I need to get it done though...
I carried a gun long before the state started issueing permits, but I complied and got one back in 85 I think is when the state started issuing. The florida permit is accepted in 26 states I think. I refuse to travel anywhere I cannot legally carry concealed, and I refuse to frequent anywhere that posts against it.

While I agree with your logic, I refuse to let the short sightedness of government bureaucrats dictate the way I live my life. I follow all the laws that make sense, even those that stretch common sense to its reasonable limit. To the rest I apply an enlightened adage, "concealed is concealed". Unfortunately, the 2 states I travel annually to are IL. and WI. The things we do for our kids and grandkids.
I have a CCW permit from my home state. My state does not require one
for CCW, but offers it. I use it when traveling to other states. I have no
interest in visiting states that don't recognize reciprocity.
I got a Pennsylvania CCW permit through the mail. They had a great program going; if you had a license or permit in your state, you could get a Pennsylvania CCW for $26, and it's good in 23 states, though not all states offer reciprocity for non-resident permits.
Sadly, the program changed March 31st. Now you have to go to Pennsylvania and apply/sign for it in person.
The Utah Permit issue system will change May 1st 2011 and Jan 2011. The major change will be that you must have a Permit from your home state before filing for a Utah Permit. You must send a copy of the Home state permit to Utah when filing. For those who have Utah permits it will apply at renewal. No new Utah permits may be a applied for after May 10th 2011 without a home state permit. This does not apply if your Home state does not issue permits ie Ill. Ca. etc. These states can apply for a Utah permit as their own states have none. The certification of Instrs. has changed as well. Good Luck

I agree with "Double D" ..... Home state permit ( Michigan ) and Fla. non-resident permit covers me for all of the travel I do ( which can be extensive ) .
The only problem I have is going through Ohio .... the way those laws are written not
even the local LEO's can explain what you should / shouldn't do.
Hey Josh...depending on how you go, either 74 or 1/52 out of Brookville....take Indiana 1 South to Aurora (Past Lawrence North Ski Slopes) and then take 50 East until you hit 275 that is still in Indiana for a couple of miles....adds a few minutes time on a two lane through God's Country, but let's you skip Ohio completely on your way to Kentucky

This is a real bummer. I am a resident of SD but an basically a motor homer. SD changed the requirements for CCW a few years ago to state that you had to show proof of being in SD for a total of 30 days before a CCW will be issued. It used to be, apply, wait 5 days, get your picture taken and they would mail you your permit.
My Arkansas Permit is good in all the states I want to go see, so there is no need for another one. I'm with D, I dont go anywhere they wont let me carry if I have a choice. The local shops that post wont ever see me til they take down that sign and California can drop in the ocean regardless.
Thanks P.S. !
My normal north/south has become I-65 .... it's not much further from the house than
I-75 .... just in the other direction. The good people of Indiana don't object to taking my gas money and it gives me a good route into the sunny south .

John, I don't think I've said hello yet. Welcome to TFF!
I know the route you're speaking of! I lived up a bit north of you for a while (Midland), but my family is all down this way. I-69 south to Indianapolis, then I-65 all the way to the Gulf!
Polishshooter lives about 20 minutes away from me, and drives a lot more than I do, so there have been several times that he's told me about how to get somewhere (although usually it's a gem of a gun shop in some remote part of the state ).
I would like to add that the state of florida has just passed open carry. It is being sent to the gov. for a signature. It will also change the law that florida residents couldnt go to surrounding states and buy rifles. There was also words to allow carry on campuses, but that part of the bill was shot down. I am happy that open carry passed. I probably wont open carry that much but am happy I can if I choose. One step closer to the 2nd ammendment. Of course every single vote against this bill was by liberals.
Not trying to rub it in juker. Just very happy to have conservatives representing our state. I hope they dont sway on other issues. I have been waiting for this for years. It has finally arrived.
I'm a handgun instructor in MI and want to add a couple comments.
1. Almost no state honors a permit issued to you unless it's your home state. For example ---an IL person can get a Utah non-resident license. While MI and lots of state accept a Utah lic. the one issued to the IL resident is no good "up here"
2. For your lic. to be good in other states make sure you know what that means. In some cases you have to apply for a non-resident lic. in some state your out of state lic. is only good if you are entering the state for a competition, etc. etc
3. In all cases it is the responsibility of the "visitor" to know and follow the state laws in which they carry. The OP is welcome in MI with his Indy. permit... but our laws on no carry zones and alcohol use are far more strict than Indiana.
Yeah, it's sad, but having something in your wallet in another state is better than nothin'.
There was a landmark case here in Illinois; there's a thread here somewhere about it. They finally ruled that permits from other states are good in Illinois, since only IL residents can get the much-ballyhooed FOID card.
Remember, it's: "Your honor, I barely had time to get to the trunk of the car, dig out my gun from the lockbox, unlock the other box with the separate ammo, and dispatch the SOBs who were attacking my family at the rest stop. It was reeeeeally close."

According to www.handgunlaw.us, only six states require that residency match the issuing state of the license/permit (Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, and South Carolina). I know that's not a definitive source, but I wouldn't declare "almost no state" when the actual number is likely 42.

I spent a short time living in Michigan (non resident; college related), so I got a bit of extra time to look into Michigan laws. Then I married a Michigander, whose family is still there, so I get to recheck to make sure things haven't changed every couple months or so.
This is an excellent point to emphasize, though. In Indiana, we have a "License to Carry Handgun." No mention of concealed or open. No mention of number. Very few restrictions on where handguns can be carried (with the only real "gotcha" being every property being used by a school counts as a school, and "school" is defined so broadly that any church with a daycare counts). And Indiana accepts any license/permit from any other state (FOID card, which is not a license/permit to carry, does not count).
When traveling, though, I must be aware that this is not at all the norm.
There are folks here on TFF from all walks of life, all manners of age and experience, with a wide variety of interests - but we all share a love of firearms. (With the exception of the occasional trolls.)
I'm glad you're here, Michigan Shootist. It's always a benefit to have someone with genuine expertise. But I don't think the information posted on TFF is "loose" - without exception, topics here are debated and discussed ad infinitum, and the one true north that always applies is, know the law, and abide by it. A lot of fine people here are heavily involved in making sure our 2nd Amendment rights are protected and preserved, and though we pee and moan about varying gun laws in different states, I'm confident you'll find we're a law-abiding bunch.
