Chemical weapons dump 'found in Libya'

    RIA Novosti
18:49 22/09/2011 MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Libyan rebel forces have discovered a chemical weapons stockpile in the country's south, Radio Sawa reported on Thursday.

"???Revolutionary forces??? have discovered and taken control of a chemical weapons depot of Muammar Gaddafi's army in the town of Jufra," Fathi Bashar, a military spokesman for the National Transitional Council (NTC), said.

The desert area, some 700 km south of the capital, Tripoli, was seized during an offensive against Gaddafi loyalists several days ago.

Ahmet Uzumcu, director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said earlier this month Libya's remaining chemical weapon stockpiles were secure.

OPCW inspectors will return to Libya to oversee the destruction of Gaddafi's poison gas supplies "when conditions allow," he added.

The watchdog believes Libya has around 9.5 ton of mustard gas stored at a secret location.

In 2004 Gaddafi agreed to dismantle his chemical weapons. In 2010 Libya destroyed about half of its stockpile.

Exactly! Kinda like Saddam and his version. Shuck, jive, and shuck some more.

The only difference in this case is, the weapons are now in control of the muslim brotherhood. Like that's any better.

I've got to wonder if at least some of that stuff didn't come from Iraq just before we invaded

I don't know if we're talking about the same incident or not , but I heard the rebels located a warehouse full of blue barrels marked radioactive. They think it is yellow cake uranium. Waiting for the inspectors to say for sure.

Missing Libya Missiles Find Their Way to Gaza Border

Some of the thousands of surface-to-air missiles that have gone missing since the collapse of the Gadhafi regime in Libya have now turned up just miles from the Israeli border.

U.S. officials say there were 20,000 Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles in Libya before the uprising, and thousands have disappeared in the looting of Moammar Gadhafi's arm caches. According to the Washington Post, many of those Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons are being sold in Egyptian black markets, and so many are available the price has dropped from $10,000 to $4,000.

Egyptian officials told the paper they have intercepted looted Libyan weapons, including anti-aircraft guns, missiles and artillery, on the road from Libya into Egypt, in black markets on the Sinai Peninsula, and in the smuggling tunnels between the Sinai and Gaza.

The heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles, most of them shoulder-fired, have a range of two miles and would pose a threat to Israeli helicopter and planes on either side of the Israel-Gaza border.

Though Libya had an estimated 20,000 man-portable surface-to-air missiles before the popular uprising began in February, Assistant Secretary of State Andrew Shapiro told ABC News in September the government does not have a clear picture of how many missiles they're trying to track down.
A spokesperson told ABC News that the State Department "commend Egyptian authorities" for seizing the missiles and other arms.

"[W]e are seeking additional information from Egyptian authorities as their investigations continue," said Noel Clay. "Egypt is one of several nations in the region where we have held discussions about potential conventional weapons proliferation from Libya in recent months. It is clear that the Egyptian government shares our concerns about weapons smuggling."

"Preventing the proliferation of these weapons is of international concern," said Clay. "We are committed to working with the Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC), Libya's neighbors, and the wider international community to build a coordinated approach to this shared security challenge."

When it comes to trusting a Muslim, they have the morals of a rutting camel. We'll end up fighting the whole mid-east some day. Then we'll need a true friend and ally like Israel. We can thank Obozo for screwing that up.

I'm thinking the same thing you are thinking! We know he had them, and used them on his own people. Just because we didn't find them doesn't mean that he didn't have any. I have always believed that he shipped them out to his neighbors, so we could not find them. He also knew how the rest of the world looked at his use of these chemical weapons, he didn't want to get caught with them!
