I have a nickle plated 3rd Model, .38 S&W Iver Johnson and was curious what cleaning solution would be the safest to use that would not damage the finish.
No regular cleaning products should harm the finish, as long as you don't soak the gun for long periods. Clean the gun, wipe it off, oil it.
Soon someone will be here to tell you Hoppes solvent will eat the nickel off! It won't used as I described.
I clean mine with anything as long as it doesn't have a water base.
I use rem oil blaster and rem oil wipes, just make sure you wipe the nickel finish dry. Do not leave any oil on the nickel finish, keep it dry from any oily finger prints or moisture, because if you oil over them, you will trap them and may cause pitting or discoloration. I wipe mine down with a clean dry cloth when I'm through cleaning and oiling and keep it in a moisture free place.
Do not use Hoppe's, it contains Acetone and will eat the finish off.
Just kidding about the Hoppe"s, it's good stuff too.
Cool. Thanks for quick response, and relevant information.
I have noticed on gun forums that sometimes a simple question will turn into convoluted responses, which can turn into flaming cat fights.
Thanks again.
