I understand where yer coming from.... and you are right.

My sole intent is to keep these scum bags from saying something to the effect of....

"See...the majority of Americans don't own guns...let's not fear that minority of fringe wacos

    and just ban them all.

I also understand where you are coming from Al.
But we have something like 300 million people in the U.S. and I don't believe that over half are gun owners. I think that gun owners are a minority of the population. And yet I believe that there are enough of us to make a big difference. As a matter of fact there are enough of us members of this forum to constitute an army bigger than a lot of countries..

    DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:
WHEN DO POLICE HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY TO PROTECT?
    By aniel L. Schofield, S.J.D.
    Special Agent
    Chief, Legal Instruction Unit
    FBI Academy

    CONCLUSION
The cases discussed in this article suggest that as a
general rule, police do not have a constitutionally imposed duty
to protect citizens against domestic violence. While
exceptional circumstances may create such a duty and give rise
to potential liability under Section 1983, lawsuits against the
police for a failure to protect may have a greater likelihood of
success in State court under a State-created duty to protect.
Therefore, law enforcement administrators must decide how to
most effectively allocate limited police resources to protect
all the citizens in their communities.

"There is no constitutional right to be protected by the state against being murdered by criminals or madmen. It is monstrous if the state fails to protect its residents against such predators but does not violate the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, or, we suppose, any other provision of the Constitution. The Constitution is a charter of negative liberties: it tells the state to let the people alone; it does not require the federal government or the state to provide services, even so elementary a service as maintaining law and order.".

I think gun ownership must be a regional thing, I can't name but two households I know of that don't have firearms in them. This including some rabid Obama supporters.
That's from a lifetime living in the South. Different elsewhere maybe?
