what is your preference for accuracy colt diamond back or smith and wesson model 617/17? would you say they are about equal? I want to get either the smith or colt revolver in .22

My take on this is they are probably about equal, with ammo they prefer. The Colts are more pricy than the Smith, as they are fast becomming very collectable. Great pistol to have as a companion piece to a Python. Wish that 20 years ago, I would have bought one, as I see clean ones in the $900-$1,000 range in retail stores. But the Smith is a very good choice as well, and I think they are somewhat less money too. Best regards, Kirk

I own both and shoot both. My 1990's 617 6" will clearly outshoot my 1970's 4" Diamondback. I have no doubt the 617 is a better target gun for me. My 1970's blued Model 17 will also outshoot the Diamondback.

Diamondbacks are slick and pretty, but they really were not Colt's premier target .22 back in the day. If you shot a Colt .22 revolver in matches in the 1960's-70's you bought an Officers Model Match revolver.

It's a good selling point that a 617 is cheaper than a .22 Diamondback, plus being stainless and (newer ones) ten shot. The one drawback to the 617 is that it's a heavy gun. For a field gun the Diamondback would be better, but I'd never take so costly a gun afield.

    Bottom line . . . . I'd buy the 617.

Thanks for the info. I will be looking for a 617. I should have bought one a few months ago it was priced at 425$ which was probably a good deal (it looked new)
