An acquaintance has enlisted my assistance to identify and quantify a Colt pistol he has. I have exhausted my limited ability to narrow down the particulars, but I know there are more knowledgeable folk in this forum.
This is what is known about the pistol:
Colt's Pt. F.a. co. HARTFORD CT . U. S. A.
PAT'D AUG. 5. 1884 JUNE 5 1900 JULY 4 1905
POLICE POSITIVE 38 SPECIAL
The frame has the Colt rearing horse logo above the grips on the left side. The serial number is
263622

Mikebiker nailed it. It is in very worn condition, so it's value is not high. Rebluing or nickel plating it would not add cash value to it. Since 1929 is before high velocity 38 Special "+P" loads were invented, I'd have to say it is for standard velocity only. The grip material is hard rubber, which is technically a plastic.
This pretty well confirmed my thoughts on the piece. Only thing remaining for me was the manufacturing year and the specific model. Also, because of not knowing the year, doubts remained concerning the specific cartridge for the pistol. I knew they were experimenting with different loads about the time this weapon was first minted and for some years afterwards. Thank each of you for your input. The friend will be somewhat mollified from thinking he had a gold mine, but, unfortunately, like Jerry Reed so aptly sung, "he got the shaft."
