Well, it's time for me to break down and buy a pistol. They are not foreign to me, but I've just never owned one. My research has lead me to favor the Kimber Compact CDP II .45 ACP.

I did take the time to try out a 9mm, but the recoil of a .45 isn't that much greater...and I pretty much respect the size of the hole a little more...and God forbid, the situation ever arose, I would need the incident to be concluded quickly.

The only issue I have is the wide magazine well. I realize .45 cal ammunition is larger than 9mm, but my thumb does not reach the slide release. I think I might have small palms. Maybe different grips will help with this

I'm wondering if there are any negative characteristics of this pistol that may dissuade me. I have not had the opportunity to fire this paticular make and it will be an investment. It sure is sweet looking though.

If I'm just doing normal target practice/plinking, I rotate my hand around the grip to reach the slide stop. I've got big hands, and my thumb don't reach it either.

If I'm practicing for some kind of combat thing/training/pretending to be shooting bad guys, I've got hold of that gun with both hands, and that left thumb reaches that slide stop real good.

How long does it usually take to "break" one in?

I don't use the slide stop, I just pull back on the slide to release it.
