BALTIMORE, June 20 (UPI) -- Police in Baltimore said a Craigslist buy went bad when both the buyer and the seller brought guns to the meeting and the seller attempted a robbery.

Baltimore police said a man and a woman arranged to meet with two men selling a sedan on Craigslist for $4,000, and when the parties met Monday night one of the sellers brandished a gun and demanded money, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.

However, the woman then drew her own gun and fired into the air, prompting the sellers to drop the gun and flee. The woman gave chase, firing her weapon several more times, before the attempted robbers managed to get away.

Police said the two men, described as in their 20s, escaped, but the woman, whose name was not released, was arrested on weapons charges.

"We understand that this was a terrifying, frightening situation, but when you fire a gun into the air, you become part of the problem," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. "The best thing to [do] is to be a good witness and call the police."

Police seized both guns and are working to identify the attempted robbers. Police said they believe the men are linked to similar Craigslist robberies in recent months.

What she should have done was drawn her gun and shot the "seller" with the gun.

Of course, that being in Maryland, she'd probably be arrested for first degree murder.

Shooting in the air may not be a good idea but what was she to do. Let them rob her? Call the police! by the time they get there you may be dead.

So if she hit him, would it be self defense? What kind of crazy laws are we dealing with?

If shooting in the air for a warning shot is going to be her defense plan she should load a blank for the first round. Otherwise don't waste a round and put it in his chest.

Well now, most of the guys I know would say the opposite....if they missed, they would claim it was a warning shot! :D

not what I meant.... Fireing a warning shot is illegal.........fireing at your attacker and missing isn't...... both likely accomplish the same thing right?

common sense would have saved her a lot of headaches...I would have met in a VERY public place during broad daylight, not some random place at night. I would have still brought my gun, but I'd rather not use it unless necessary. And if I do have to pull my gun out, it will not be to fire a warning shot.

again... if the criminals got away, the story should have been this.

they attacked me, I shot to defend myself and missed.. and they got away.

    right?
