Well, the Hurley's are just about to book their deer hunt this year in South Carolina, and it's gotten my hunting juices flowing.

We rely on the .270 and .243 to do our deer hunting.

All I've ever used for deer hunting is the 25-06

Extreamly flat shooting, hard hitting and mine is grouping well...What more can I ask for? :D

.30-06 for its versatility and availability.

I have killed bear and deer in Maine with a .30-30 growing up, but have grown to prefer the .30-06 for the wide variety of ammunition one can "make" reloading. Also, it is a cartridge that just about every little country store and bait shop has on the shelf in an emergency.

I will either carry, depending on where, my Marlin 336 .30-30 or, preferably, unless in brushy areas, my Browning Lightening .30-06. It is set up to use the open sights or the scope, using very low profile mounts. Neither has never let me down when it came time to fill the freezer.

  4. My deer cartridge ain't on their so I guess I'll go with 30-06

Sorry Southern, the poll only allows four choices. I knew when I made it that some good cartridges would be left off.

If you favorite isn't on the list, just tell us by posting it below.

I don't hunt deer, none around, here but I do hunt caribou of a similar size. My vote is for the .30-06 but only because my trusty old .303 British wasn't on the list. The .30-30 has taken MANY moose and caribou around here but it is lacking at the longer ranges where I usually take my animals.

Well guys I just have to jump in with my personal favorite, with the right bullet, a 165gr fail safe with 74grs of IMR 4350. The cartridge, why a 300 H&H of course!!!! That long bolt trough is not nearly the problem you might think it would be. They feed really smooth, rifle will feed empty cases without a catch and hold 4 in the mag. A truely grand old cartridge that has killed train loads of game before the birth of the "Short Magnums" will beat them badlly with really heavy bullets, and full preasure loads. Kirk

  12. Another vote for the venerable ol' .30-06 here. It's difficult to improve on perfection. ;) The '06 will take anything in North America, and most of the rest of the world, with proper loads and in skilled hands.

the .30-30 WCF cartridge utilized in lever action rifles has killed more deer in North America than all other cartridges combined by several orders of magnitude...

the average distance for a shot on deer in NA is 73 yds...

hunting skills should include the ability to stalk, track, and close within 100 yds of your prey...

the .30-30 WCF does not have very impressive specs, and most "average" hunting rifles chambered for this round and fired by the "average" shooter only realize a 4"-5" 3 shot group at 100 yds...

exactly what is needed and what it was designed for.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

if you want to discuss the best all around hunting cartridge for all NA game than of course the .30-06 wins...

but the target in question is Deer.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    best regards, mike.
