I was just given an old L.C. Smith 12 gauge double barrel shotgun by my father. It looks to be in pretty good shape overall except the forend will not lock in place, it stays on somewhat and won’t fall off, it’s just very loose. The shotgun itself closes and locks tight, there is very little looseness or play.
My question is: Would the gun safe to shoot without the forend? Or is the forend itself mostly cosmetic?
Take the fore end off, and open the breach. The barrel will come off. Therefore, the fore end is needed to hold the barrel on when the breach is opened. You can replace the latch your self, or you can shim up the latch. The shim will fall out every time you remove the fore end, but it works. We can not tell you if your old gun is safe to shoot, or not. That would be a job for some one that can tell if it is safe, a gunsmith. It won't cost you very much to have a smith look at it, and tell you if it's safe to shoot, or not.
