I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting pretty darn sick and tired of all the drug advertisements on TV. The other day I noticed that the whole commercial break was nothing but drug ads. Zocor, Flonase, Viagra, Allegra, Celebrex, Meridia, Lipitor, Prilosec, Claritin, Vioxx, Nexium......

Geez, people! Can't we do anything anymore without taking drugs? You may call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm starting to think that this is some kind of plot between the drug companies and insurance companies, to keep Americans hooked on some kind of medication whether they need it or not. All you have to do is convince the sheep of America that they need your drug in order to function. Just convince them that they are all sick or have some type of disorder.

    It's hogwash!

My wife is a nurse, and is subjected all the time to these legal drug-pushers. They have a LOT of influence over how doctors do their work, and between the drug-pushers and the insurance companies, you cannot get decent health care these days. They suck you in just like a street-corner dope dealer. They give you a free sample, to see if the drug "works for you." Then, once you're convinced that you can't live without it, they charge you out the wazoo for it. It's unethical, immoral, and needs to be stopped.

We, as a society, need to take a step back and concentrate on good medicine. And stop letting the drug companies mislead you with their constant ads.

What bothers me about those stupid drug ads on TV is that a lot of them don't even say what they are for - what the heck use is that to the common folk unless they already have the condition for which the drug is being prescribed?

    Stupid waste of ad money.

A classic example are the drugs used to treat 'ADHD' in kiddos.

When I was growing up nobody knew about 'ADHD.' If I acted out, Dad modified my behavior for me. No drugs necessary.

Bob, thank you for mentioning what you did...I have forever wondered what most of these meds are for...the ads are often so "generic" the viewer has no clue what's supposed to be treated by the latest wonder-pill. Obviously I don't possess a marketing degree...I would really like to know what the strategy is (assuming there is one) behind those ads.

It's a ploy to get you IN your doctor's office and talking to him about their drug. If they told you what it was for, you'd probably shrug and think to yourself that you don't need it. Notice they all say, "Ask your doctor if (insert drug name here) is right for you."

They figure that if they can get you all the way to your doctor to ask if it's right for you, then there's a better chance you'll try it.

There is not one pharmaceutical drug out there on the market,
perscription or over the counter that does not come with a side effect. Drugs mask a problem, drugs do not cure the problem, drugs are chemicals. Cures are illegal.

That clears it up for me perfectly, Sniper, thank you much.

As to the side effects...have they started backing off the mention of those some, at least in the TV ads? It seems like they were getting worse and more graphic...whatever drug it was that could induce "sudden and uncontrollable bowel movements" and "gas with oily discharge" seemed to be the last straw! I mean, what's next...can you hear it..."Use of this product can result in insomnia, loss of appetite, dry skin, discolored earlobes, and the steady seepage of all vital bodily fluids from between the toes."

I'm sure Saturday Night Live or MadTV probably has long had that covered in one of their commercial take-offs!

    "gas with oily discharge"

I had forgotten about that one! I got a lot of mileage off of that ad.

LOL...me, too! It was one of those things where the first time I heard it, I was thinking, "There's no way they just said that in a 'real' TV ad!"

i agree, i was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, 5 or so, but everyone could tell i was the kid that was constantly movin, into everything, off the wall, here, there EVERYWHERE, well after many years on it i decided FOOK what they think, I am not takin this anymore (9th grade), if people cant handle me how i am then its your problem, i am now graduated, should be 12th grade this year, and i no longer consider myself ADHD, i may be energetic and my mind sometimes goes in all directions at once but no one but me notices it...

and i feel im a better person to date than i would be wasting my parents hard earned money for monthly doc visits and perscriptions, i hated that so-called "medication"...

Is Olean that stuff they put in the Wow potato chips? I ate a whole bag of 'em when they came out, and I couldn't get off the crapper for a week.

This is my first time on this forum, you guys are wierd! I hate those ads too, they try to make people think they need something they probably don't. I guess all ads do that, but with drugs it just doesn't seem right.
