I was talking to one of my co-workers the other day. since we work at a metal finishing company and do a lot of work for the aerospace and firearm industry, the conversation turned to guns. I was talking about how i had been working on the reliability of my 1911 by polishing the internals. he mentioned adding a nickel teflon coating, which sounded like a good idea for areas like the feed ramp and other areas that contact the round. but i got to thinking of some other coatings that we offer. we do a spray coating called dry film lubricant. it is dry but offers great lubricity. it is currently used on internal combustion automotive engines, and rotating parts of many pratt and whitney jet engines. does anyone think this would be a good coating for maybe in between the slide and frame? maybe the trigger or any other friction points that dont get impacted, only rubbed against.
is anything like this used in firearms that you know of?
Maybe...... Can we wait until it's my idea?
JUST BE CAREFUL TO NOT GET ANYTHING SLIPPERY INTO THE CHAMBER.
It sounds like a good idea. The only rub(ha ha)would be if things got too slick and stuff was banging around too hard.
that seems similar to what i was thinking. It is just a spray on "paint" so any contact like the round hitting it or the hammer contacting the end of the firing pin would chip it. but the bonus is that it would be easily removed if it didnt work. I would think that it would also tighten up the gun a little due to the adding of material, not just polishing. plus, since it is "dry" you wouldnt need as much oil to attract dust. hmmm, im really interested to try this, but i dont want to ruin my new springfield. I need to find a old test mule. I supose i will ask the local 1911 shop.
i dont think i could sell it or even give it away especially since it is FAA spec stuff. I wish you were more local i could do the coating for you free of charge i bet. but thats a lot to ask for you to send a gun out here to a complete stranger. let me know if you can think of some way for it to work. maybe if you have a relative or good friend out this way...
