I had post this sometime in 2014...Chief
It must be some kind of a surprise to see these varied subjects I choose to write about listed here on the Board...be that what it may....what the hey, here goes! Yesterday I was at the market for a quick purchase of some fruit for the table fruit bowl...the wife likes the color of fresh fruit and the apples and bananas make that...I noted this old fellow in a wheel chair...seemed to be waiting, just parked there in the produce section...My goodness, the old fellow looked remarkably like Ernest Hemingway...as I greeting the senior with a cheerful salutation, I remarked to him that fact of looking like the famous, but, long-departed author Hemingway...A smile flashed across that bearded face and he laughingly said, "I sure hope so for I was just in a look-a-like for Hemingway contest...Hey, the fruit bowl could wait, so I told him...Jake, short for Jackson, was his name...I told him about meeting Mr. Hemingway when I was a mere 'snot-nosed' farm boy in Iowa...I told him knowing Hemingway's family roots were from Dyserville Iowa...reminded him that was a little town of the farming community in Iowa where the movie, FIELD OF DREAMS had been filmed. I told Jake about my 'dogging' for the pheasant hunters...how the 'dogger' proceeds up the corn rows, ahead of the hunters to scare out the hiding fowl ...to 'hit the ground' when the fowl takes to wing and allow them to become targets for the hunters...Yeah, I did...I had a captive audience.. Jake's wife had returned early in my delivery of the tale and she seemed equally impressed.. maybe even enthralled, that I had actually met the gilded author...but, I realized the yellow ripe bananas I had selected was fast ripening and the beautiful GALA brand apples needed attention like peeling and eating...I informed Jake and his lady I must be on my way...Jake reached out and grasped my hand in a firm shake and Ms. Jake tittered something about never having expected....Jake held my hand and questioned what I thought that make and model of shotgun Hemingway had used was...I'd mentioned the beautiful over and under 16 gauge firearm and that distinct ringing sound it made when fired.....a rather morbid ponder from Jake that if that may have been the shotgun Mr. Hemingway had used to end his life...I hurried away, never answering Jake's final question.....Chief
