Ever notice that when you see a bunch of geese flying in a "V" formation, seems like one of the sides of the "V" is always longer than the other?

    I wonder why that is?

If there are an even number of birds, one arm MUST be longer than the other. :D

The birds form the V formation to avoid turbulence and gain some drafting assistance from the birds ahead. One arm will have less turbulence or more draft, or both, depending on which way the wind is moving in relation to the birds' heading.

Now you know all I know about the subject.

    The real reason

I just had to go to the serious side and give the "real" reason that one side is usually longer. As Pops said the reason they fly in a V formation is aerodynamics-that is the trailing birds get the benifit of drafting on the bird in front-therefore the lead bird has to work the hardest and as a result the lead is constantly changing to give different birds the lead. (that is why they constantly "honk"-to encourage the lead bird to keep going) Now you know for all you enquiring minds out there!!!:D :D :D

Actually, we don't know why geese fly in formation. It seems they are very secretive.
