I know you have to take the extractor plunger out for head spacing but do you need to take out the extractor all so. Thanks Olmarine. Semper Fi U.S.M.C 1972-1976

You should remove the ejector unless the headspace gauges are cut away for it. I have never removed the extractor and don't recommend or see any need to do so.

Just idle curiosity, but has the barrel been replaced or rechambered? It is rarely necessary otherwise to check heaspace on a sporting rifle since few get enough wear to cause any headspace concerns.

Jim is spot on. Most headspace gauges are relieved for the ejector. And you will need the extractor in place to pull the gauge back out when you retract the bolt.

Only time you would need to remove the ejector is when you are lapping the bolt lugs or truing the boltface. And of course, replacing a damaged ejector..

The extractor should only ever be removed to be replaced or if you are truing the boltface.
