my favorte ww11 air craft are the p 51 and the f 4u. did our military ever do test dog fights with these planes to see which plane was better. in europe the mustang was top dog. in the pacific no plane out performed the f 4u. maybe a p 38 under some conditions could beat a f 4u.i know the hell cat had a fantastic record, but it is UGLEY
In all honesty the Corsair was rather homely too...
I'll add on one other question for you military aviation buffs. The Army Air Corps flew the P-51 in the Pacific Theater and it did as well against the Japanese as it did in Europe. Did F4U's of the U.S. Navy or Royal Navy ever engage if air combat with the Luftwaffe fighters? I've never been able to find a reference on that.
i am lucky,we have a very good air musuem here in so cal. chino planes of fame. they have a F 4u that flies. also a bear cat and many other flyable ww11 air planes. in fact they have the only flyable zero in the world with the correct nakajima engine in it. but that r 2800 radial is music to here .
