Well, I finally did it. Here I am, a good died-in-the-wool .45 guy who thinks 9mms are only good for annoying whatever you shoot and what did I do today? I bought a 9mm. Even though it's strictly a right-handed gun and I shoot lefty, even.

What can I say? I've wanted a P38 for years!

Terry, the rear lever, at the top, is the safety. The middle lever, just above the trigger, is the slide stop. The forward lever, just above the serial number, is the take-down latch. You push the barrel rearward, slightly, to take the pressure off, then turn that lever down, and pull the slide/barrel off the frame to the front.

I figured it had to be a slide stop but couldn't see how it worked as there doesn't look like there's a notch in the slide.

Notch is on the inside of the slide, not the outside like on a 1911.

jmohler, you picked a nice one for your first 9mm. You could have definitely done worse!

Bravo my friend, you did well. P38 is a fantastic collectors piece and a very respectable 9mm at that.
