I have been contacted by Ospery Defense to become a dealer of their new line of gas piston conversions for AR style rifles. Now my cost is right at $300 counting freight and I can sell them for $325 and make money. Here is my question, how many of you AR owners would think of sticking another $300 or so in a gas piston conversion for your AR? I know that is the right price as to most units but is it really worth the money? My ARs work fine as they are and I see no need in it but some do and if I can get enough who would want to do this, I would become a dealer and sell to forum members at cost + shipping. So now tell me if any are interested in these units and if you think in general they are worth doing at all to your AR. Here is their site so take a look at their product: http://gaspiston.com/
It's nice to see that something like that is on the market. I certainly wouldn't mind buying one for my AR, but it's not something I'd buy right away. I have a Bushmaster Predator and would like an A3 style upper for it. That would come before a gas piston conversion. And, I don't really want to spend $1k for an upper with the gas piston in it already.
Speaking for myself, no. If I shot more, and was not trying to save money to "start life," maybe. But the AR gets very little mileage, cannot justify $300 when that would nearly get me the revolver I want to add to my collection.
But I am not exactly a good sample of your clientele or this forum.
Check ar15.com and see how many of those guys converted to the piston system. Lots of them have. The die hard ar fans that put mucho bucks into their guns don't think twice usually. 325 is fair considering the adams systems are a little more and are quite popular.
I'm still building mine and it has crossed my mind to get one but I guess I need to find out how well the gas impingement set up works and if it works for what I want it too.
I believe that sometime in the future most if not all AR's wil be made using a piston system but for now I think most AR owners think that a piston conversion is something that isn't needed since the current system works as well as it has for so many years. It's an interesting option to think about but there are still a few bugs with the piston system to be ironed out before I would invest in one.
I think it may be a worthwhile thing. Many fans of the AR platform love it for its modularity. The fact that you can drop a whole new upper on a lower and have a near completely different rifle for different roles has alot of appeal to some folks. and alot of those folks have the money to do it.
ETA: As someone mentioned before AR15.com is a great resource for this rifle platform. they have a whole subforum dedicated to piston guns. Its very informative, although General discussion can be somewhat crazy.
i am new to the forum, i own an armalite ar a4 and the new ruger sr556. i like the ruger because it runs way cooler and also much cleaner. the ruger is gas piston the armalite is direct inject gas. but i work at ruger so i might be a little bias. but i owned my armalite years before i started working there. and considered buying a conversion for it
The reason why you would want to add it is the gas impingement system can be adjustable. That means, you funnel just enough gas back to the bolt to cycle it and the rest of the gas is expelled through the gas block.
Why would you do this? Less recoil. The more gas your bolt gets, the more it slams back the recoil buffer tube and that causes more recoil. Reducing the amount of gas that gets to the bolt means a lot less recoil.
However, my experience with AR rifles is zero. I don't have one, I mean. I shot a couple a few times, and I didn't like the 'bounce' of the buffer tube. However, I hear an adjustable gas system can eliminate a lot of that. That's why I'm seriously thinking of building an OLL AR rifle.
Anybody with more knowledge and experience please set the record straight. I'm interested in learning as much as I can before I 'pull the trigger.' Sorry, pun intended.
