Meanwhile, here in the States, we are doing the opposite.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing on the radio this morning. They were talking about how the Aztec "Day of the Dead" falls on Halloween, and that local school teachers were building little altars in their classrooms so that students could "celebrate this cultural holiday".

Can you imagine the outrage if a teacher built a Christian altar in a classroom?

What the hell is going on here?

Why should Russians banning Halloween be bad? At least they didn't ban it because it was a capitalistic and imperialistic tradition, based on superstition. Besides it is only banned from schools. What people do in their own homes is no matter of state anymore.
You must remember that Orthodox Church was the main rallying point for those opposed to communism in the Soviet Union. As the result most of what the Church says is followed by the politicians stemming from former anti-communist factions and by the rest who want to disassociate themselves from the years the Church was persecuted.
Slavic peoples have their own tradition of honoring their dead on November 1st. It is a much more somber affair, with visiting of graves, rememberance services and the like. Some even view the cheerful, colourful festivities of Halloween as distasteful.

GGB, you'll notice that Shizamus' message has a "thumbs-up" icon beside it. I think he probably agrees with what they did. But thanks for your well-though-out reply. It's good to hear about other countries and cultures, and your mini history lesson helps put things in the proper light.
