Ok as I've said before I'm new to all of this but here is where I'm at as of now. I have a S&W Shield 9mm and the Hornady Lock n Load AP. I bought some plated bullets from Rocky Mountain Reloaders 115 round nose. Now I need to get some powder and primers and find the right data for reloading these along with OAL. Can I get your advice on this and any and all will be nice do I can get started. I have been reading and looked in my Lyman 49th edition. I also have the Hornadys 9th edition coming tomorrow. Help me out with this I'm ready to learn!
Thanks
Some times you can get load data from bullet manufacturers. As a general rule, run them midrange of a jacketed bullet or slower. All 9mm I've ever loaded used a small pistol primer.
Starting out with a progressive is going to be a steep learning curve for a beginner, you need to hit the manual thoroughly before starting and you may want to find a seasoned reloader for overwatch. As for powder that's the million dollar question, power pistol is an ideal 9mm powder if you can find it.
For 9mm, I use Bullseye powder with excellent results. Primers are going to be small pistol, CCI #500 or equivalent. Given the current scarcity of powder, that's probably going to be your limiting factor. Buy as many reloading manuals as you can find, and make a list of powders that fit the bullet you want to load. Then keep that list handy wherever you go until you find a powder on your list; buy it! It won't be there an hour later.
Be sure that you read all those manuals, too. They don't do you much good on the shelf, and each will give you a little different insight into the process of perfecting your load to get the best performance from your gun. Knowledge, in this hobby, leads to both performance, and safety, and safety is paramount. This is a potentially very dangerous pastime, but there's no good reason for it to be, if you're willing to take the time to learn. Read those books, then go get some more books. Compare what they say to what you observe as you progress in your reloading adventures; it's guaranteed to be interesting!
