I'm trying to find out what years were the J.C. Higgins model 28 made? Also does anyone have an idea when "Tip Off" scope grooves stated being made into recievers. This one has the gooves and that would help with a stating point.

    Thanks,
    Homer

homer46, first let me welcome you to the boards. I'm sure one of the guys who knows rifles will be along in a bit to help you out.

My friend is really into those rifles but he just left yesterday for Washington state for about 10-15 days.

Welcome and I have no idea. These house guns (Sears) were made by so many different makers, their sometimes hard to cross-reference. Winchester, Marlin, Mossberg, Savage and a few more made J.C. Higgins for Sears. Maybe Doc? He`s pretty darn good at cross-referencing. Sorry? LTS

My old 10th edition of the Blue Book says that Sears used the JC Higgins tradename from 1946 to 1962. It doesn't list any models or prices because they have "shooting value rather than collector value". Maybe that has changed in the past dozen or so years.
I believe the tip off mount grooves came about in the very late 1950's or very early 1960's. I know the late Winchester 61's had them and that model was discontinued in 1963.
My old Gun Parts Corp catalog sez: JC Higgins Model 28 autoloading rifle, was made by High Standard.
    15th ed. Gun Trader's Guide sez: High Standard Sport-King autoloader , made 1960- 1966
Soooo... JC Higgins Model 28 made 1960-1962 ??????????

The tip-off grooves actually date further back into the mid to early 50's on some models.

I'd agree that your Higgins 28 is late 50's to early 60's.
