I just got a Western Field mdl 740A-EMN serial # AC52353 and I was wondering the value and if its in fact the s ame gun as a Marlin 336? Will the serial # give an age of the gun?The metal on the gun looks good,no rust or pitting,it has a not so high quality rear sight(looks factory). No scope but drilled and the holes are plugged. The forearm stock has been refinished but looks OK. The buttstock doesn't look as good.It has a crack near the bottom at the grip.About 2"long crack. Also some stock erosion around the tang area. The stock looks like it got wet at some point and stayed wet for a while would be my guess.Maybe it was standing up because the metal shows no sign of getting wet.I got it home and fired 10 factory rounds through it and the fired brass looked good,no balooned primers or anything I could see.Do you think this gun is worth the cost of another stock? If so would a 336 stock fit? Any help would be appreciatted, thanks Joe.
