I just bought a Springfield model 87a .22 .
"22 Short long or long rifle, long rifle only as automatic" is printed on the side
I want to know what it means.
Welcome to TFF.
Not sure why it has ""long rifle only as automatic" but it's shoot the shorts, longs and long rifle .22 cal., 'bout all I can tell you on that.
Savage produced the Model 87 as the Springfield 87 for Mongomery Wards stores. It is the same rifle as their Model 87K. The rifle will function as a semi auto with standard or high velocity long rifle rounds and can be used as a manual repeater with longs and shorts since these cartridges will not function the action semi-automatically. The bolt knob must be manually pulled to the right then hand cycled and relocked by pushing to the left before the rifle will fire as a manual repeater. The vast majority of these rifles were made prior to 1968 and will not have serial numbers. They fire "to" an open bolt. That is to say, that when you fire it you'll see the bolt recoil back and stay back as long as you hold the trigger. Let go of the trigger, and the bolt is released to fly forward, but the striker is retained by the sear.
And to put it very simply, it means shorts and longs may be fired by manually operating the bolt, but for semi auto, only the Long Rifle will operate the action. They should have put a " but " in there. Shorts, Long or Long Rifle, but, only Long Rifle in automatic.
