A friend from work got this gun from his grandfathers estate. I dont have much knowlage on these old guns to help him. On the left side below bolt it has G E R 98, under front mount of scope it says schilling 1917. gun has very very heavy barrel and very wide forestock. I didnt see more to add scope was put back on. Im not sure if this gun has been sporterized or not or why it would be with such a heavy barrel dont even know the cal. poss 8mm. Beautiful old gun in real nice cond. Any help with what its worth or knowlage of this gun would help. Thanks

It was a Gewehr (Rifle) Model 1898, as issued in WWI. The original barrel would have been 29.13" with a nearly full length stock and bayonet attachment. The barrel is of average weight. Valentin Christoph Schilling was a contractor to the German government, making revolvers and rifles.

It is very likely that your gun was altered or "sporterized" to some extent and if the barrel is not original, it is almost certainly not 8x57JS as it would have been originally.
