I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I cannot find any information on this, I think this bullet is too heavy for a 44 spec, but I do not know.

I have 25 bullets (Hornady XTP 300 grain) that were given to me. I was wondering if I could load them into a 44 spec case. I cannot find any load data for anything larger than 250 gr for the 44 spec. That leads me to assume that these are more for the 44 Mag.

The pistol these would be going through has a very short barrel, maybe 2".

What are your guys thoughts on this?

The SAAMI maxiumum pressure standard for the 44 SW special is 15,500 PSI. My book shows that 5.8 grains of AA No. 2 under a 200 BAR XPB (solid copper), will give you 884fps, with a PSI of 15,430! I would suggest that you save those 300 gr. bullets for the .44 mag.

Ya, I agree. I shoot 44 spl and that 300gr. is definalely a magnum projectile.

Actually they are even a bit too heavy for .44 mag IMO. more suited to the .444 marlin.

Double Tap 300 gr ammo fresh off the UPS truck on a nice cold day taken right out of the box loaded and shot at 25 yards with one hand offhand standing. First time I ever shot anything in my Ruger Super Blackhawk but 180 gr and 240 grain and I am a believer. The last time I had shot that gun was at 100 yards in a stiff wind and my sights were still adjusted for that. Near as I can figure out velocity is around 1300 fps and not as bad to shoot as the 180 grain ammo. That being said they are over pressure loads in a 44 spcl at 800 fps and higher velocities and I would be very careful about what I shot it in unless you loaded it down to about 600 fps. I would think the data for your XTP would be about the same as for my Double Tap.
