streets gotta be hard on a horse 7 days a week

some years here i used to do Anzac day in light horse uniform ( WW1) and that stuffed shoes and nails in that few hours ..

and none of the carriage horses i saw in NY had road shoes ( special rubber bonded to steel shoes) , horse cops here got em , not cheap but the police horses seem to do great with them

As you note, Jack, there are very effective ways to address footing/impact stress on pavement for horses. OTOH, NYC had a huge population, ( by many accounts over a million), dray horses into the 20th century which led to the formation of the NYC PSD to clean up the sh*t ! With every horse dropping 20+lbs of fecal matter/day where do you suppose it ended up when you're surrounded by water ?

Today, if the horse carriages were banned the horses would end up as dog food and NYC would lose another tourist attraction ! >MW

We've got the carriages in St. Augustine. We go there 3-4 times a year to play tourist. Always feel sorry for the horses. Early morning til late night.

If they would use those shoes, then at least the horses could keep their jobs.

i know folks here who take tourists on rides day in and day out ( dirt roads though .. ) , now the horses are that used to it, they act up if they have a day off ..

so its a job , a business , like any business you look after the income stream maker , IE the horses ,, spend the money and keep your business and show the complainer have no valid complaint

    from the video comment:

"Horses belong in pastures with other horses, on grass..."

do you know what happens when you put a horse out in a pasture, with everything it needs close to hand(er, hoof)? the same thing that happen when you put a human in a comfortable climate controlled house in front of a computer with everything they could possibly ever want, all the food they want, without having to work, or exercise, or do anything more strenuous then walk to and from the fridge and the bathroom. just picture it in your mind. yeah, that's what happens.
