My Bushmaster has a sling loop which seems to be attached to the gas block.

How would I get the sling loop off?
There does not seem to be a screw or a hex bolt.

You'll have to drill the rivet head off and then use a Brass punch and a good solid blow with a hammer and you can drive the body of the rivet out. Really not too difficult at all, a 1/8" drill bit will pop the head off, make sure the rifle is secured and take it nice and easy. You may want to use a center punch, this will keep the bit from walking out on you.

If it's the rattling around that bothers you, you can also tape it up or use some tool handle dip to keep it from clanking around.

It is the rattling that bothers me.
I was thinking of tieing it immobile with black thread, but it would look tacky.

Black tool handle dip would stop rattle and be inconspicuious. Other than that just drill the rivet out

Congrats on a successful surgery! They make some quick release loops if you want to put it back on in the future.
