If you aren't familiar with Northern Virginia, esp. Alexandria, they are all into architectural integrity. They want to keep a modern city looking like it did 200 yrs ago.

One man who owned a hunting/fishing store spent over 8 yrs and all his money to comply with all their B/S so as to expand his store, but, in the end and apparantly at the last minute, they pulled the rug out from under him and denied his request.

So, not harboring any love for the city council, he rented the space to a Sex Shoppe. Now merchants closed by and other property owners are crying foul and claiming their property values will plummet.

For the whole story click it on...is this revenge or just rewards?

The store seems to have created a "buzz" in Ol' Town. The got what they wanted. The present store owner is compliant with the zoning. ;) :D

I love it when somebody rubs the governments bureaucratic nose in the steaming pile that it created. :(

Buisness is the economic version of war. ;)

While I agree on the practical side that a city must try to keep its identidy by preserving a down town core, but at the same time they must remember that those very buisnesses are their lifes blood.

In the end I think that the voters in that city will be asking hard questions on why that was denied. :D:D

especialy if there are a few people there that liked their ol sporting goods store. ;)

Promoting fornication, or rather, passing it along, is a good thing every now and then.

Good on him. If they want to be unreasonable, lets go all the way…

Something very similar happened in a medium sized town here in Oregon. There was a second hand store with old west themed murals all around the building, very good taste and well done. The city codes however, required that all businesses be painted one basic color. The owner asked for an exemption and fought with the city for several years. Finally they threatened to block the renewal of his business license. So, what did he do? He nailed plywood over all of the murals and painted the entire building hunter's blaze orange; they never said what color the building had to be. Anyway, he had his exemption within a couple of weeks.

I just had an excellent idea... Open a strip mall in downtown, include a gunstore, a hardware store, an autoparts store, a lumber yard, a beer/liquor store, a 'gentlemens club', and a BBQ joint. You could call it MENS PLAZA and rest assured you would never go out of business;)
