I have been reading these posts for about 1 hour now and see many posts with Serial Numbers close to the one I have. I am just trying to learn the model and manufactured year of the IJ Sealed 8 that I have. I don't have access to a camera at this time, but will post pics if it is necessary. The serial number I have was stamped on the bottom of the handle (on the metal of course) and is "N3XXX". Yes, it is only 4 numbers after the N. Any ideas?
Well, in 1952 N prefix serial numbers on the sealed 8 went from N17381 to N30480, and in 1953 it was N30481 to N47860, all with 5 numbers. I can find no reference in Mr. Goforth's book that N was ever used on any special order guns. I think you have a gun that was stamped with a broken die. Other wise don't know. Clear pictures would show if it had any special order features such as over size or MOP grips. Perhaps hrf has some insight.
RJay, I think it was made in 1951: He started new prefixes in his charts with 00001 following the letter, and on page 19 he stated: ".... the numbers started over again at 1 with the letter N". I don't recall seeing any actual serials with a zero or zeros following the letter.
The chart lists N00001-N17380 for 1951 which indicates N3XXX was made early that year.
If they did start with N1 instead of N00001, then I agree with you, but all the charts show the serial numbers starting with zeros? It would have been nice if we were able to ask Bill himself. But Regardless it was made in one of those three years, 51/52/53. Hey, that is close enough for government work.
