Bayonet M4 or Fighting Knife M3

This was issued to my father and is unmarked. It obviously has characteristics of both the M3/4, but why? What is it?

Could this be a rare freak show?

My father was a cook in Korean War.

    Any help appreciated.

Thank you for the response Bill. Why does the pommel not have a locking mechanism? Wouldn't this thing just fall off.

I can't tell from your pictures that it doesn't have a locking mechanism!

I'm no bayonet expert, but that's pretty strange. Maybe the factory got some parts mixed up. It doesn't look to have been tampered with.

Being unmarked and in that leather scabbard makes it a commercial piece. Probably cobbled together with whatever parts were left in the bin and sold in the PX or local market- but certainly not an issue item

    Thanks Stede, that makes sense.

I hope they sold it to pops cheap !

I don't feel bad now about throwing it into trees when I was young.
