Hi. I recently inherited a .38 detective special. pics attached. It was originally my grandfathers, then my Fathers now mine. Anyway, I am looking for whatever info I can get, date of manufacture etc... and also value. I am not looking to sell it, I will hand it down and keep it in the family, just curious.

Left of barrel reads; Detective SPEC. .38 special CTG
Right of barrel reads; Colt Manufacturing with Town/State
Ser.# 622392

Dick Special 622392 was made in 1952.

If it was me I'd keep them grips.

The texture of that fake jigged bone gives a good grip. Add the grip adapter and you have a good little package.

Those old fake ( sorry, gin-u-wine faux stag ) seemed to be popular for the old Colts and Smiths, Heck, even the Air Force used them for some of their gate guards ( oops, sorry again, Air Police units ). I agree that I would get some original grips but leave the stag grips on for shooting and handling.
