I have an Iver Johnson .38 S&W 5-shot hammerless, top break (double lug) w/ a 3.25" bbl. Serial # on bottom of trigger guard is 26692. Patent dates on bottom of grip show 1896 and 1904. Topstrap is stamped "Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works."

Any idea on date of manufacture? Also, was this intended for black powder, smokeless, or both? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

these patent dates were used between 1907 and 1911, which spans the black powder (up to 1908) and the smokeless (1909 and after) eras. remove the grips and check the serial number and letter code found on the left side of the grip frame, while your have the grips off check the hammer spring. is it a flat single leaf or a coil type?

    Hi b.goforth,

Thanx a lot for responding to me. The letter code looks like a "D". Best guess. The hammer spring is a coil. Thanx again.

third model safety automatic hammerless large frame serial number N 437 was made in 1933, 750 made that year. production actually stopped in 1934 at serial number N 800 with a large number in inventory so it is unknown when this revolver was actually shipped. there have been none of the post WWII HAMMERLESS models show up yet.
