First post here. Somehow I have never found this excellent forum before today when I started looking for information on Iver Johnson revolvers.
I picked up a Iver Johnson earlier today. I have always had a soft spot for top break revolvers. I shoot modern S&W revolvers a lot but this is my first top break revolver. I am hoping that members here can shed some more light on this new, to me, revolver. I did a bunch of research this evening and several of my internet searches led me to this forum. So from that research here's what I think I have and then I will share photo's so you can hopeful tell me if I am correct and then hopefully give me a bit more information about it.
I believe I have an Iver Johnson, Safety Automatic, Second Model chambered in 38 S&W.
It's in fairly good condition for as old as I think it is. There is some of the nickel plating missing on the barrel just ahead of the cylinder with some rust also. There is some rust under the top strap but otherwise fairly clean condition. The bore is also in pretty good condition with minimal pitting.
I took the grips off to get the main serial number: Q56734 (I believe my research indicates a "Q" prefix was used in 1906?)
This number matches the numbers on the trigger guard and under the top strap.
The barrel rib has the follow text:
The Butt of the grip has the following patent information:
Hopefully those pictures are helpful. If any other information would be helpful let me know and I will do my best to provide it.
I would love to know if I have the model correct? Also if my guess on the manufacturing date of 1906 is correct? I had hope to shoot this revolver, but now having done some research on it, I am not as sure about the safety of shooting it. Can this revolver be fired safety with 38S&W ammunition currently available? I am a reloader and would not be afraid to load ammunition specific for it if currently manufacture ammunition is not safe.
Finally I would ask for your opinion on the current value of this revolver? No plans to sell it since I just got it, but I am always curious if I got a good deal or not.
Thanks
Matt
