Greetings David...I just read your inquiry about Jack Apperson---strange, I hadn't thought of that name for a long time.....Stange also how events that I have written about bring folks like yourself into my life...Please let me refer you to another story down in my Stories Section.....Please go down and read both Part I and Part II about the sniper in Vietnam we called SPOOK. A few years ago there was a lady living in Virgina who read the SPOOK story and her brother turned out to be my S-2 officer, Palmer Sell---she had gone thru JD to get my name and how to get in touch with me....we've been in touch every since...Turned out that almost 10 years ago I had sent her Father a John's Angel that I make......in his namesakes memory. Palmer Sell Sr. lived on a farm in Neosho, Wisconsin ---the old man passed away a couple years ago. As far as I knew, Jack Apperson (SPOOK) hailed from Wisconsin. David, I am not a professional writer----I am a veteran of 20 years naval service that ended in 1971 when I retired at Port Hueneme, California...I lived there until 1980 when I moved to the Phoenix area. As most veterans who served in combat, I had a tough time and eventually found out that by writing about things, both real and imagined, helped me a lot....When I get around other combat vets I speak easily of my memories--just can't to the family, or so it seems. To make my stories seem interesting rather than just docu-dramas, I embellish to the degree that seems feasible....I told the story about Apperson, the sniper going out to get the old Cong terrorist....did you like the description....I think anyone who writes likes a bit of encouragement and praise.... Yes David, that's the Jack Apperson I knew---hope I didn't rain on your parade....Be sure to read about the SPOOK....Best regards to you and yours and enjoy the holiday season...Say some prayers for the troops in the field....American men and women need our support.... Chief

Thanks for the info. However, the Jack Apperson who served at GITMO, Port Hueneme and 3 tours in Vietnam was from, and presently resides in, Prineville Oregon. I can testify to his location as I was his stepson.

My profile can be found at http://profile.military.com/member/view.do?memberId=17610413

I am interested in locating anyone who served with Jack and who might remember me or the head trauma I recieved in 1969 -

    Thanks - David Apperson

Good Afternoon David....here in the Valley of the Sun it is so pleasant today..Supposed to get up into the mid-70's and the sky is so very clear and bright...sure not warm enough for the pool yet but thoughts begin turning to getting it ready. David, there are a number of Seabee reunions going on now around the country--some scheduled for later...Perhaps you might touch on these and check with those in charge of the poroceedings to get your search posted...Apperson is not a common name---just for interest I checked the Phoenix phone directory and there were only 2 Appersons listed...Actually, my Father come from Germany and my last name is fairly common---in fact checking my own name out on Google, it goes back to the Civil War era....As I mentioned to you before, I am sure the Jack Apperson I wrote about was from Wisconsin...Good luck on your quest. Thanks Chief

I was not able to locate a Jack Apperson out of Wisconsin, but I did locate one Seabee who remembered me from Port Hueneme, as he served 2 tours in Nam with Jack. We are now friends.

I am going to try to attend the Lincoln Reunion and see if I can locate those who served under Jacks supervision.

By the way, do you know how I could find out how many Boilermakers were assigned at GITMO during the early 60's [ between 1960 - 1963 ]?

David, that would be one hell'va task determining 'boiler makers' at GITMO during any period of time...BTW, the term boilermakers in the Seabees would have the rate designation/job code of a UTILITIESMAN (UT) as that was my own specific designatior, even though with years of service, I branched out into what was called 'secondary job codes'---one of my SJC's was nuclear, biological, chemical warfare ---another instructor---one most complex that I trained for was NETOPS (NUCLEAR EMERGENCY TEAM OPERATIONS). The latter listed job code was included in DISASTER RECOVERY OPERATIONS, a task specifically assigned to the naval Seabees. Good luck David.

AFTER THOUGHT ABOUT THE NETOPS TEAM I WAS ASSINGED TO:
Shortly after the holidays we were preparing our trailers to go out onto the road and train Naval and Marine Corps Reservists in NBC Warfare procedures...This was out of Port Hueneme. The BROKEN ARROW event happened and our team was placed on alert with mount out orders from Point Mugu to Spain....The Air force took over the entire security/recovery operation so we 'stood-down' and went about our regular sked. Chief

    Broken Arrow
On January 17, 1966, an SAC B-52 had a mid-air collision with a KC-135 tanker while refueling over Palomares, Spain. The B-52 was carrying four thermonuclear B28 bombs. The bomber had begun the mission at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. The KC-135 had come from the Moron Air Base, Spain. All four KC-135 crew members were killed, while four of the seven B-52 crew parachuted to safety.
President Lyndon Johnson, the Department of Defense, the Atomic Energy Commission, and the Spanish Government received news of the nuclear accident. Nuclear safety teams were dispatched immediately. Within hours, the 16th Air Force had located the three B28 bombs that landed on the shore. However, the fourth bomb was missing; it was not found for 80 days. High explosives in two bombs had detonated on impact. Plutonium dust had spread over several hundred acres. One reassuring fact emerged from this incident: inherent safety features designed and built by Atomic Energy Commission contractors ensured that no nuclear explosion occurred.

I David Apperson truly support those on this forum who encouraged me to stay the course. After spending hours of research and study during the last five years things are starting to line up for the good. Thanks once again Chief. I will have more to report within the next 90 days -

I just returned from VA clinic in Santa Rosa. These people are very kind and the medical staff want to help. Symptoms from head trauma not curable, but at least now I will be on pain medication, and now have scheduled neurology appointments in bay area.

But I am happy that the truth is prevailing -

What I can say at this time if you are a soldier on special assignments make sure you document everything . . . .
