What’s the Difference Between a Conservative and a Liberal?

People often wonder what is the difference between a conservative and a liberal. The simple fact of the matter is that the major difference is that conservatives wonder first what it is they are responsible for while liberals wonder first what everyone else should be doing for them.

Here are some brief rules of thumb:

    * If a conservative sees a U.S. flag, his heart swells with pride.
    * If a liberal sees a U.S. flag, he feels shame.

    * If a conservative doesn’t like guns, they don’t buy them.
    * If a liberal doesn’t like guns, then no one else should have one either.

    * If a conservative is a vegetarian, he won’t eat meat.
    * If a liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for everyone.

    * If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat it.
    * If a liberal see an enemy he wonders what he can do to appease him.

    * If a conservative is homosexual, he’ll quietly enjoy his life.
    * If a liberal is homosexual, he’ll demand everyone get involved in his bedroom activities.

    * If a successful conservative is black or Hispanic, he’ll see himself as having succeeded on his own merits.
    * Successful liberal minorities still claim “racism” and want government to give them even more.

    * If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to work to better his situation.
    * A liberal wants someone else to take care of him.

    * If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
    * If a liberal doesn’t like a radio show, he demands that the station be shut down or censored.

    * If a conservative is a non-believer, he just doesn’t go to church.
    * Non-believing liberals demand that everyone cease believing and demands churches be censored.

    * If a conservative needs health care, he shops for it, or chooses a job that provides it.
    * Liberals demand that everyone else provide him with healthcare for free.

    * If a conservative sees a law, he thinks long and hard before suggesting a change.
    * If a liberal sees a law he assumes it is just a suggestion and does what he wants anyway.

    * Conservatives feel there is a right and wrong.
    * Liberals feel that nothing is really wrong… unless it is believed by a conservative.

    * Conservatives believe in freedom, responsibility, tradition, and self-reliance.
    * Liberals believe in license, government restrictions, upending tradition, and collectives.

A true Virginia Conservative is an Eighteenth Century British Liberal. He believes in the rights of man, avoiding the interference of unnecessary governmental regulation, and equal opportunity for everyone. He is self-reliant, voluntarily compliant with the law, self-disciplined, and prepared to take care of himself and his family. (And expects others to do the same, to the best of their ability.)

People who are either conservative or liberal can both be full of it. In fact, many conservative ideas are espoused by liberals and vice versa.

There are people who identify as liberals serving in the military. They would likely disagree with you there.

I'd probably change that to vegan. Vegetarians actually eat animal products. I don't think you'd find many who want to get rid of cheese and eggs.

I'm not so sure that this is true. Obama hasn't pulled troops wholesale out of either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Quietly? By that you mean tapping under bathroom stalls? Quietly that way? Perhaps you meant quietly the way conservative Catholic priests who are against gay marriage, condoms and sex before marriage practiced quietly? It could also be quietly the way people get 'straight' training from their church. I know gay people. I'm to know any of them demand that I be involved in their private affairs. Mostly, they don't want to be discriminated against.

I haven't seen Obama cry about this. There are certainly minorities who do cry this, but I don't think only conservative people see themselves succeeding of their own merits.

Conservatives don't apply for Social Security, Medicaid or Unemployment Insurance? They don't default on mortgages and ask for government help? I've talked to people on this forum who tend more to the latter.

I guess you missed all of the censorship changes that were brought in under Bush 2. I don't recall anyone saying that say Limbaugh should be taken off of the air. Most of the grumblings about programming I hear come from the right.

    Check out this for instance.

I'm yet to meet anyone anywhere or hear anyone on TV/Radio saying that churches should be censored unless it pertains to people making threatening or violent statements. Please remember that the non-believers fund all of those tax breaks that you get for paying money to your church. You don't even hear people commonly grumbling about this.

Many conservatives also go without. I have talked with people on this forum without any coverage. Many liberals also shop for healthcare and work at companies that provide healthcare. I work with people who are located in Chicago who went to Obama rallies. They have health coverage. True many more liberals than conservatives want universal government health coverage, but this the quote above assumes that each liberal wants this and that only men are liberals.

There's no monopoly on breaking the law by people of any political ideology. Both people who identify as liberals and conservatives break the law. We have laws, police and courts to enforce laws broken by people of any political ideology.

So a liberal would be ok with someone murdering their child as long as it was a liberal? Great logic.

The beliefs of many liberals and conservatives cross. I don't hear many conservative politicians pressing for an end to unemployment insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, etc. Those all have nothing to do with self-reliance. Living in a cave without even fire was a tradition. Are conservatives pushing to go back to that or do most people want the 'liberal' idea of living in a house with central heating?

I'm not sure that any of the above quotes are in fact correct. Making massive sweeping generalizations about 1/2 of the population is the same as someone assuming that anyone who owns a gun must live in the mountains with a grizzly bear as a pet. Both assumptions are equally ignorant.

Please let me know what a moderates stances are?
I think you are confusing conservative with republican. Sadly the GOP is not longer the conservative party.
If you are a liberal Obama supporter then come out and say it. Obama is the worst thing that could have happened to this nation. He is a socialist/marxist. Is that the direction this country should go?

    Right on, Sat, as usual.

You and I are generally always on the same page..... :)

The fact that the GOP has not only forgotten it's core values, but have been pedalling hard to the left, is what caused the November 2008 disaster. We need a revitalized GOP that adheres to conservatarian values, along with God's assistance, to keep us from being an experiment gone bad..... :( :(

We are going to have to get rid of the Rockefeller Republicans first. They have a death grip on the throat of the GOP.

Going back further, trouble, we need to finally be rid of the entire Cabot Lodge faction.....

Incidentally, the Bush's, all of them, are descended from Cabot Lodge both by blood and politically..... :( :(

    Need we say more ????????????

Here is a telling sentence from Cabot, Jr's Bio from Answers.com:

"Lodge, a liberal Republican in domestic matters, inherited his grandfather's isolationist views in respect of foreign policy...." [approximately 1939]

    Some things never change.

As was stated above several times. I AM conservative. There is NO political party representing my interests any more. Quit lumping me in with the GOP.

I'm also an independent; recently changed from being a registered Democrat (the reasons for my previous party affiliation I won't elaborate on here.) You are correct bcj, both parties suck, but one sucks far more. The Democrat party is no longer that of FDR, HST or JFK; it is now the party of Marx, Lenin and Mao in deed is not name.

The Republican, by the same token, is no longer the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt or Reagan; its philosophy has been usurped by the country club blue bloods that have no real clue liberty includes the unwashed masses along with them, let alone would they allow any one of us into their circle of friends.

The only hope I see though is taking back the Republican Party and steering it back to strict constitutionalism. Third parties may sound appealing, but that route would split the vote and guarantee our spiral down into tyranny. As soon as the Republicans show some real reason to support them I will, and I’ll change my party affiliation again

Sat's posting is fun to read and funny. Nothin wrong with a good sense of humor. There probably are some people that are actually that far apart, course in reality i think its not near that polarized. My niece is a vegan but she does not care that everyone else in the family eats meat And vegetables. we still getalong well because nobody really cares if she doesnt eat meat and she doesnt care that we are chomping on venison, bluegills, trout, rabbit, pheasant etc..
Politically we disagree on quite a bit but we dont get into it that much.
This whole liberal/conservative thing has gotten way overhyped in my opinion.
I would be considered by most as conservative in fact on social issues my neice thinks Im way over the top "conservative" but I dont think so.
You gotta watch that you dont get sucked in to some BS by both repubs. and Dems.thats for sure.
