I have 13 or 14 pmags and 5 metal ones. The metal ones have failed to feed properly, so far the pmag have not. That is not really a recomendation but just my two cents worth.
Most of mine are black some with windows and some without. The ones that I have that are not black are 20 rounders that are tan or FDE (I don't know what the heck FDE means). Here is a link for some FDE, which is just about the color of mine. And these are a pretty good price. http://twoagunmags.corecommerce.com/Pmags-Ar-15-223-5-56/Magpul-PMAG-30-round-GEN-2-FDE.html
If the Magpul handrail is tan then it is the Magpul Flat Dark Earth. Magpul parts come in 3 basic colors. Flat Dark Earth, OD Green and black. P-mags are available in all 3 and will match the Magpul hand guard. There 'can' be a slight difference in the color due to small variations in the color added to the polymer batch but it should be pretty much un-noticable.
FDE is flat dark earth.. but the magpul ar forestock / hand rail i have is almost what i would call light tan.. almost manila..
weird.
I may have to take some tan spraypaint to a metal mag.
( painted one metal mag red, and another green and loaded tracer and green tips in them in my 'go bag' so I can just load by color code. I also have some dusty brown painted ones that are in another caliber.. 300acc.. so again. I can grab mags and go without mismatching calibers.
mind you i have only painted the cheap milsurp used mags I've collected at gun shows. most i got in a box for 5$ a pop. well used.. but function good. many have replaced upgrade anti tilt mp followers.. ( cost more than the mags sometimes. )
The metal ones I have are either Bushmaster or Colt. The 20 round Colt one that I was using yesterday would not lock the bolt back and a couple of times the top round in it just popped out when inserted. I can't really hold it against it, after all that particular one is probably 40 years old. Most likely I have enough mags to last me the rest of my live, but I decided that if I ever do need new magazines for the AR, they will be the pmags.
I have a stack of metal 20 and 30 rounds ones, all different brands, and have had problems with all of them. My 'plastic' mags on the other hand have been flawless since day one. I have Tapco and Pmag, the Pmags are a bit slimmer. I think FDE ones are the ones that you are looking for.
These are FDE Pmags. Never a problem with them, other than the fact I've decided to start using black mags instead. All Pmags. The two metal mags in the photo are the two mags that came with the gun, and I painted one of them OD.
I just went through the entire Magpul news items in the Magpul site going back 6 months. There is nothing there about colors being discontinued and new items are also being made available in stealth grey.
Pretty much everyone seems to have them available at around $13. Ammunitiontogo, Brownells, Midway... all of them have the FDE P-mags. Also, I was wrong - they are available in 4 colors, not three. There are two different green colors.
just got my FDE pmag today, came in at lunch.
happy as a clam. can't wait to get home to see if the dye lot matches the rest of my magpull FDE hardware.
sure beats my idea of spray painting one of my old milsurps to try to match... heck a can of GOOD paint costs half as much as the pmag!
and the g2 pmags have the much better follower than the milsurps
