My father has an old Marlin and I am trying to find out some info for him. He believes his father who was a gunsmith had it prior to him being born (1936).

It appears to be a model 39 but does not say that anywhere on the gun. It has a hexagon barrel and the Serial # under the lever has an S then the Ser# stamped offset from it. Starts out as 131xx.

I checked on: http://oldguns.net/sn_php/marlinlookup.php. It is either 1958-59 or 1876.

I am unfamiliar with Model 39's so I have know idea if the S is part of the serial # or not and thought that newer 39's actually said Model 39 on them, also thought newer ones had round barrels.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    With the "S" # then it is a 1958/59

That does not match the octagon barrel.
The 39 (octagon barrel) was discontinued in 1936 and replaced with 39A.
The 39M (octagon barrel) was introduced in 1973.
My best guess is you have a 39A which has had the barrel replaced with an
    octagon barrel

My book says that if there is an "S" prefix in the serial number it was manufactured prior to 1932 and the octagon barrel is correct. Value ranges from $200 to $1500 depending on condition.

Thanks for the info. My father was sure the gun was much older than 1958 because he said my Grandfather had the gun prior to him being born. He thinks it is a Model 1896?. It does not say Model 39 anywhere on the gun.

    The octagon barrel is original.

Like I said earlier I know nothing about the 39's or earlier lever 22's. It just looked like the pics I have seen of 39's but has a long barrel, about 3-4 inches longer than my Marlin 30/30.
