Wikipedia ---OR Punch holes thru big bears , it does make a good close up or back up around browns and grizzly country. Knocks 400lb hogs down easily. Handload and go after big afican game. Or just to load down for a big bore plinker.

The cartridge also lends itself to handloading cast bullets. If you are thinking of going that route, stay away from any microgrooved guns. You want a ballard cut rifling. The shorter-barreled versions (like the guide gun) can be pretty brutal to shoot with a lot of blast and recoil.

I shoot a single shot (Sharps) that I've killed a couple of hogs with, but mainly use it for punching paper with a heavy bullet. It's an easy cartridge to load.

Back in the late 70s early 80s my brother used a 45/70 to hunt the S platte river bottom. Looked like the one in Gun Clingers picture. In that heavy cover situation that bullet worked very well. He made some great shots couple at 200yds and collected two nice white tail bucks

as a reloader i can bring my loads up to 458 win mag standards.this means i have enough gun for anything that walks.it was a black powder load at first introduction and at that a fairly tame load.do not load anything you are not sure of.my reloads would destroy early model rifles that were meant for black powder and some new ones. old semperfi
