I would assume one of them is a serial number (if you are lucky it matches the gun) and the other is an arsenal inventory number, or a police department inventory number.

Okay, I'm an idiot - would someone please explain the caliber part to me??? What exactly is 7.65??? I understand 8mm, .32, .45, etc. but am running into a big problem with some of these others.

7.65 is the same as .32 acp-just expressed in mm.

Thank you davem I do appreciate you explaining it to me and welcome to the boards.

Now why do they have to use two different terms to express the same caliber???

One is based on the metric system (7.65)=European and the other (.32 acp) on the American or decimal system.
