Big Ugly Sr has this thing sighted in a 600 yards. I was wondering if it would reach out farther than that. I have hit a 10 inch gong at 800 yards with my 8mm I was wondering if the .338 will reach out that far and hit a 10 inch gong or am I gonna be all over the place.

here is a youtube of a 300 win mag reaching out to 1011 yards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssh8Vsbvn2A so its probably the MAX effective range is about 1200 -1300 yards. any farther and you want more bang for your buck and have to go to a .338 lapua.

Here are the ballistics for a .338 win mag round

    Weight: 225gr
    Muzzle vel: 2800fps
    Ballistic Coefficient: .430
    Target distance: 1000yards
    Target zero:1000 yards
    Wind: 5mph
    Vel at target: 1192
    Energy at target: 710 ft.lb

    Heres you some graphs BU!

Out standing info. Both posts has given me some good info. I was thinkin about doin some long range shooting this week end and it looks like the .308 and the 8mm is the animals of choice. I like the 8mm cuz its old, I like the .338 cuz it knocks the crap out of ya when you shoot it, the .308 is just a damn good round. I was hopin to get some trigger time with the 338 but it dont look like it will reach like I want it to.

how far are you looking to shoot? 12-1300 is far remember 1760 is a mile!!! oh and by the way the 338 is notorious for a good solid kick in the shoulder if you dont either have a muzzle break or recoil pad!

well im sure you can reach out 100 more yards thats not a problem just remember all the effects it takes to make a shot at that range. when i was shooting at only 800 the coriolis effect moved my round 7.5 inches. your wind is going to be the biggest problem and its going to take a couple shots to get on target using a .4 BC round at 1400 to get cold bore shots at that distance will require a large caliber like .416 or .50 with a BC of between .9 and 1.0. 1400 is a long piece thats almost 4/5s of a mile!
