I have an opportunity to purchase a Mossberg 535 3 1/2" chamber shotgun without a barrel. The deal is "worth it" price wise, but I have no intention of shelling out a couple hundred for a new barrel - so in seeking a used barrel for replacement, not being terribly familiar with the finer details of Mossy's 3 1/2 shotguns, do the 535 and 835 barrels interchange? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I do not believe they are interchangeable.
The reason I say this is because some of my suppliers have barrels for the 835 but do not for the 535 and if they were the same they would show that.
I looked around and found barrels for the 835 but none for the 535 (new or used).
That may be why the 535 that you are looking at has no barrel.
I would ask why there is no barrel.
How much are they asking?
A new barrel will cost you a couple hundred and a used one will not be much cheaper (If you can find one).

There is always a reason why there is no barrel. Sometimes it has been misplaced and other times you have a probmatic firearm. I have bought my share of used shotguns with the barrel missing and have most likely lost money on every one. When you add up the cost of replacing the barrel and other parts that need to be replaced , it is a loosing situation. Now I'm not saying yours is one of those but I always seem to buy the ones that are ready for a complete rebuild when ever the barrel is missing.
Since you are already having a difficult time finding a replacement barrel I would suggest that if your not getting it for next to nothing, then I would pass it by.
Thanks for the input guys...........I did a little more research after posting this and determined that the barrels do NOT interchange - the 835 has an open ended magazine tube like an 870 Rem and the 535 is closed-ended like a Mossy 500.
I am aware of the actual details of the "missing barrel" and I dont have an issue with these details. A new 535 barrel is available for just under $200 and I have already located used ones for about half of that.
I would pass on this deal. The 535 has a unique barrel. As far as I know no other Mossberg barrel will fit. You will pay $200 for a barrel for it if you can find one.
I have a 535. Did you ever shoot 3 1/2 mag shells with one? The recoil is real nasty. You can buy them new for $400 with two barrels. Its a great shotgun in that price range but without a barrel its not worth much.
20" barrel is #17821MTFO $160 plus shipping. Found this on a Mossberg forum.
